Hot Weather, Cool Hair: How to Keep Your Extensions Healthy All Summer Long

At Prism Salon, we know how much you love your extensions—and we want them to love you back all season long! Whether you're heading to the beach, jetting off for a summer getaway, or simply soaking up the sunshine, it’s important to protect your investment. Summer weather can be harsh on your hair—especially on Slice Strand extensions—but with the right routine, you can keep them looking fresh, healthy, and beautiful.

Here are our go-to tips for keeping your extensions flawless through the heat:

1. Use the Right Products to Nourish & Protect

Start your summer routine with clean, hydrating products that are extension-safe and sulfate-free. At Prism, we recommend:

  • B3 Extension Repair Shampoo & Conditioner – A powerhouse duo that gently cleanses and deeply repairs without stripping moisture.

  • UN.TANGLED by Kevin Murphy – A leave-in treatment that hydrates, smooths, and detangles.

  • SHIMMER.SHINE by Kevin Murphy – Adds lightweight moisture, gorgeous shine, and a dose of UV protection—perfect for sunny days.

  • Young.Again Oil – A nutrient-rich serum that protects against free radicals, adds softness, and seals in hydration.

These products work together to fight frizz, dryness, and environmental damage—keeping your extensions silky and manageable no matter how hot it gets.

2. Pre-Soak Before You Swim

Before diving into the ocean or pool:

  • Saturate your hair with clean water.

  • Coat mids to ends with a generous amount of conditioner (this acts like a barrier).

  • Style your hair in a low braid or bubble braids to reduce tangling while still looking chic.

Bubble braids are one of our favorite summer styles—they’re gentle on extensions, easy to do, and super cute for the beach or pool. Just secure sections with soft elastics spaced a few inches apart, and you’re good to go.

  • Pro tip: Best case scenario? Don’t get your extensions wet at all.

3. Wash Immediately After Swimming

If your hair gets wet from salt or chlorine, don’t let it sit:

  • Wash with B3 Repair Shampoo and Conditioner as soon as possible.

  • Follow up with leave-in treatment and light oil to replenish moisture.

  • Detangle gently from ends up using a Wet Brush or wide-tooth comb. My favorite is the Unbrush.

  • Avoiding buildup and dryness will keep your extensions looking smooth and feeling healthy.

4. Protect Against Common Summer Slip-Ups

Here are a few things to steer clear of:

  • Avoid tight hairstyles when your hair is wet, which can cause breakage.

  • Never sleep with wet extensions.

  • Be mindful of sunscreen ingredients — look out for Avobenzone or Octocrylene, which WILL turn extensions pink or brassy.

  • Ask your Prism stylist for clean, hair-safe product recommendations if you’re unsure what to pack for vacation.

5. Keep Up with Your Maintenance Schedule

Routine move-ups and maintenance appointments are key for long-term extension health. Don’t skip them! We’ll help you stay on track and avoid tangling or stress at the scalp.

Final Thoughts: Protect Your Hair, Protect Your Confidence

With a little summer-savvy care, your extensions can stay soft, strong, and stunning all season. Whether you're traveling or staying local, keeping your hair healthy helps you feel confident and radiant wherever you go.
